Anselm Kiefer, Bergkristall (1991)
Like a true alchemist, Kiefer turns lead into rock crystal. A poisonous metal that is, moreover, used for making bullets is paradoxically transformed into a healing mineral. Kiefer stamps his mark on the creation by chalking the title onto the surface of the composition. The title itself evokes echoes of Kristallnacht, the Nazi pogrom against the Jews (Germany 1938).
Although the picture seems a bit dull, seeing the work in real life is very impressive.
